Artist Kent Rogowski’s Everything I Wish I Could Be is an exploration of language, emotions and the desire to change and improve. Self help books run the gamet, from relationships to death and every topic in between. Rogowski’s photographs these tomes arranged by theme, creating an image of emotions and lives lived through title pages and spines.

In the artist’s own words, “I had been thinking about how people deal with moments of pain and change in their lives and knew that I wanted to explore this in my work. I started collecting self help books and realized that there was literally a book for every moment in life: from relationship advice to dealing with a midlife crisis. I liked the idea that I could create images that would represent individual moments in life using the books that were written to soothe and help with those moments.”

The president says he and Michelle paid for their college educations with loans. He attended Occidental College from 1979-81, then Columbia from ‘81-83, followed by Harvard Law from 1988-91; Michelle went to Princeton and graduated from Harvard Law in 1988.

Both paid off their student loans in about 13 (Barack) and 16 (Michelle) years.

Seems insane to me, and I don’t even want to think about what debt college students are saddled with nowadays.

Specifically, one book. This book.

This book should be a best seller. This book should be required reading for graduating from high school. Before you get that diploma, you read this book.

This book deals with debunking “Neurosexism,” which is a very fancy term for all of that evolutionary psychology bullshit that people spill about those “brain differences” between boys and girls.

This book debunks such myths as:

Boys are better at math than girls

Women make crappy lawyers/business CEOs/etc, as their brains are not cut out for aggression.

Men make crappy counselors/primary school teachers/primary parents/etc, as their brains are not cut out for empathy.

MEN ARE BUILT FOR GOING OUT AND HUNTING WHILE WOMEN ARE BUILT FOR STAYING HOME AND BABYMAKING IT’S NOT SEXISM IT’S JUST BIOLOGY

And many other such myths.

Furthermore, this book covers topics such as:

Neurosexism and gender perceptions in multiple races (as this is not a singularly white experience, just as the western world isn’t a singularly white experience)

Sex discrimination in the workplace, and how women are (or, more often, are not) allowed to behave

How science is used (badly) to support many of these claims

Experiences of trans* people, both through interviews and empirical studies.

AND FINALLY - It is all brilliantly researched, cited, compiled - and it’s easy to read! Cordelia Fine actually manages to be funny while writing this, which I think is important, because it makes all of this information infinitely accessible.

Delusions of Gender has reinforced what Oberlin taught me: The gender binary is stupid and arbitrary, and dangerous. And it is a self-perpetuating bias that needs to be addressed to be overcome.

Girls Need to Say “Math Is for Me”:

It’s great to see that so much attention is being given to the obliteration of the ridiculous stereotypes involving women and mathematics. This article addresses the fact that even though girls really do often feel just as capable as boys, they just don’t dig it. Like, they just don’t feel like math is their thang, you know?

While Caryl Rivers and Rosalind Barnett stress the importance of confidence building, they also point out that negative images of mathematicians in the media certainly don’t HELP girls relate to math. (Sidenote: In my opinion, they do the exact opposite! Seriously - why are the smart girls always the ones being made over in like, EVERY teen movie?!)

My fave line (surprise, surprise):

“We need to do all we can to help math-and-science girls believe in themselves. We also need to help them believe that STEM careers are not for lonely male “nerds.” Engineering and science are typically collaborative efforts; the image of the socially awkward loner is a far cry from reality.”

This is totally in-sync with Malcolm Gladwell’s 10,000 hour theory (that it takes about 10 years to become an expert in your field). My students found this so fascinating when we read Outliers, and were encouraged to keep striving towards excellence.
